Cuba Bike Open Challenge Charity: Choose a charity (Open Challenges) Challenge:  Central Cuba Bike Charity Challenge Dates: 16/02/2012 -24/02/2012 Deposit*: £ 250 Minimum Sponsorship*: £  3500 Grade:  Moderate   Sign up for our Cuba Bike Open Challenge in February 2012 and join a small group of cyclists who are all raising funds for their chosen charity. Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean. It is only 90 miles from Florida, yet politically and economically it couldn’t be further from the United States. This stunning bike ride affords a great opportunity to discover the ‘real’ Cuba - cycling deep into the Cuban countryside, biking through the wetland area of Zapata Peninsular National Park, and hugging a rugged Caribbean coastline with the dramatic backdrop of the Escambray Mountains. We will also be lucky enough to sample Cuba’s more famous attractions, such as the crumbling beauty of Havana, the ‘Bay of Pigs’ and the World Heritage site of Spanish colonial town Trinidad. Our bike route covers a very varied terrain, so expect lots of hills as well as stretches of long flat runs. We’ll be averaging 70km a day and many of the roads will be single track tarmac of pretty low quality. Think potholes! Cycling brings you closer to the local community than travelling by car or bus ever could, and although our route encounters little traffic, we will meet many rural communities as we pass through small villages and fishing towns.
